How to Clean Your Bike Chain in Sydney

By Dr. Bike Sydney ยท June 2026 ยท 5 min read

Your bike chain is one of the highest-wear components on your bike, and also one of the cheapest to maintain. A clean, lubricated chain can last 3,000+ km โ€” a dirty, neglected one might fail at 1,500 km and take your cassette with it (a much more expensive fix).

Here's the Dr. Bike Sydney step-by-step guide to cleaning your chain at home, written for Sydney's specific conditions โ€” coastal air, occasional salt spray, and those unexpected summer downpours.

Why Chain Cleaning Matters in Sydney

Sydney's coastal humidity and salt air accelerate chain corrosion, especially if you ride near Bondi, Manly or the foreshore. A chain that looks fine on the surface might already have micro-rust in the links. Combined with road grit picked up on wet days, this creates an abrasive paste that eats through your drivetrain fast.

What You'll Need

๐Ÿ’ก Sydney tip: Use wet lube from May to September when rain is more frequent. Switch to dry lube in summer โ€” it attracts less dust on dry days.

Step-by-Step Chain Cleaning

1

Degrease

Apply degreaser to the chain while slowly backpedalling. Let it soak for 2โ€“3 minutes. If using a chain cleaning tool, fill with degreaser and run the chain through for 30 seconds.

2

Scrub

Use a chain brush or old toothbrush to scrub the chain links, cassette cogs and chainrings. Focus on the inside of the chain where grit accumulates between plates.

3

Rinse

Wipe the chain thoroughly with a clean rag while backpedalling. Remove all degreaser residue โ€” lube doesn't bond well to a degreased chain that still has chemical residue.

4

Dry

Wipe dry with a second clean rag. If possible, leave the bike in a warm spot for 15 minutes to ensure all moisture is gone before lubing.

5

Lube

Apply lube to each individual link while slowly backpedalling. One drop per link is enough โ€” do not over-lube. Wipe excess off with a rag after 5 minutes. Excess lube attracts more dirt.

6

Shift through gears

Backpedal while shifting through all gears to distribute lube evenly across the cassette and chainrings.

How Often Should You Clean Your Chain in Sydney?

When to Replace Your Chain

Use a chain wear indicator tool (available for under $20). At 0.5% wear, replace the chain immediately if you want to save your cassette. At 0.75%+ wear, you'll likely need to replace the cassette too โ€” a much more costly repair.

โš ๏ธ A worn chain left too long costs 5โ€“10x more to fix. Cassette replacement adds $60โ€“$200 depending on spec. A new chain is $25โ€“$60.
